Often people say that you should "wait until you're ready" to attempt astral travel. They say this with good intentions, astral traveling can be challenging and scary but in my opinion, it’s terrible advice. Nobody is ever ready for astral travel. During my first astral trip, a flock of crows cracked my chest open and then a bunch of bees put me back together after handing me my own heart. And keep in mind, I had never done this before.

The astral is a strange, screwed up place and if you go there, strange and unexplainable things will more than likely happen to you. You’ll meet strange beings, see things that you couldn’t imagine even in your wildest dreams, and probably have some experiences that are going to scare you.

Don’t let that stop you.

Astral travel is life-changing. That journey with the crows and bees was one of the best things to ever happen to me, it began a very long and difficult process of self-discovery but it led me to heal that I would never have found otherwise and it led me to a deity who has cared for me in ways I could never have imagined then.

Astral travel is absolutely worth every odd, uncomfortable, or downright strange experience you’ll have over there. You will learn and grow in so many ways, you will build a spiritual community, and you will find a new way to tap into the magic that you’re learning to harness.

That said, there are a few things you should know how to do before you attempt aural travel.

The first is how to properly ward yourself. Learning to cast a circle or another type of ward is vital to safe astral travel, especially for beginners. This ward protects your body from spiritual harm while you’re away from it and it also prevents anything from following you back to this realm after you return. In the very beginning, a basic ward may be all you need. As you continue to learn and journey in the astral you may find there are beings that you wish to join you on your journeys. When you get to that point, you’ll want to learn to build semi-permeable wards that allow only the beings of your choosing through.

Another vital skill is banishing. In the event that your ward fails, your astral journey attracts something you don’t want around, or, well… pretty much any other astral “oops”, banishing is going to be your first line of defense. Learn to banish and have all of the materials needed to perform a banishing on hand any time you astral travel.

Other helpful skills include cleansing (useful for preparing yourself and your space before traveling), and grounding (useful for coming back to the real world AFTER traveling).

If you don’t know how to do any of those things, stop here and GO LEARN. This module will still be here while you get yourself set up. Skipping the basics necessary for this kind of work can lead to disaster and some very unpleasant experiences. You’re much better off starting out prepared than going in without all the necessary tools and never wanting to go back because something bad happened!

If you’re all set and have all of the necessary skills under your belt already then it’s time to move on to Lesson 2: Before You Start Astral Traveling >>
