Astrology is an ancient system that uses the positions of stars, planets, and other astronomical bodies for divination and guidance. No one knows for sure when and where this system was created, but there’s evidence that points to Mesopotamia between the years 1950–1651 BCE as being one of the first places astrology was practiced.

Different cultures created their own methods of using the stars and planets to gain insight into the energies they experienced on earth. For this reason, there are several branches of astrology that exist today.

In this course, we will focus on contemporary  Western Tropical astrology, but it’s worth noting that Chinese astrology, Vedic astrology (from India), and Heliocentric astrology (ancient Greece) are also widely practiced today.

“What’s your sign?”

How many times have you heard that question? Too many to count, I’m sure. Astrology has become mainstream in recent years, and there’s a lot of misinformation going around regarding this divination system.

Usually, people are asking what your “sun sign” is when they ask you that question. And if you’re even remotely interested in esoteric practices, you’ve probably used your birthday to look up your sun sign. It’s one of the twelve constellations that make up the zodiac. When you read your daily, monthly or yearly horoscope, you’re getting a basic idea of what’s going on in your sun sign during that time period.

And those general horoscopes are perfectly valid. As long as they’re written by a reputable astrologer, your horoscope can shed some light on what your life will look like in the coming days. However, you’ll likely get a more in-depth and layered perspective if you also take into account the other factors that affect your horoscopes such as your moon sign, your rising sign, and the various positions of the planets at your time of birth.
