Reading tarot for others is a milestone for most tarot readers. It’s a personal choice on when you should begin doing readings for others, and only you know when it's that time for you. That being said, I don’t think anyone ever feels completely ready. I’d encourage you to just go for it! Try it out on your friends and loved ones first before branching out into readings for strangers.
Here are some tips if you’re just getting started with reading for others:
Don’t be afraid to ask questions as you’re doing the reading. Something like, “Does any of that resonate with you?” can open a conversation for a different interpretation of the cards if needed. You can also ask for some backstory before you begin a reading, so you have a starting point. Questions like, “Is there anything in particular you’re looking for guidance on?” or “What is the current situation regarding your career?” are perfectly appropriate. It’s not “cheating” to talk to your querent about these things before or during your reading. If anything, it will help you narrow down the different meanings of the cards, so you can provide the most relevant interpretation.
Let your querent know that any tarot spread is a snapshot of the moment. Things change all the time depending on the choices we make. It’s not uncommon for tarot readings to change drastically from day-to-day or week-to-week.
Guide your querent towards open-ended questions. Tarot cards are rarely able to give a firm yes or no to any question.
Don’t answer any question you’re uncomfortable answering. It’s totally fine to decline or redirect a question if you feel it’s inappropriate in any way. Trust your intuition. As the tarot reader, you decide what questions to answer.
