Virgos can be an exacting bunch, so I want to make sure I do this right. As the summer winds down and the seasons begin to change, we celebrate Virgo witches in all their complicated glory. The Virgo witch is logical, organized, and analytical. They think things through before acting rashly and they are clear on their intents, which make them successful spellcasters.
Self-improvement is a big deal for them and they are always working to make themselves stronger, more efficient witches. Magic surrounding self-improvement and growth come especially easy. Virgos are also generous and loyal, and if you ever need some magic done on your behalf, a Virgo witch will make sure the job is done right the first time. With a strong sense of personal style, Virgo witches will want to work through problems themselves and find the best solutions after checking all the data. They do their research. Frankly, Virgo’s focus and determination make them a force to be reckoned with.
As far as weaknesses go, Virgo turns it all inward. When out of tune, their attention to detail — a normally fantastic trait — will turn obsessive and they can become overly critical, not just of themselves but the people around them. But this isn’t malicious. Virgo is never trying to hurt your feelings, they just overthink. Sometimes their usual great advice can be cutting and too blunt. Always, though, the person most likely to be hurt by Virgo is themselves. They can become anxious, and are prone to hypochondria and isolation.
Self Acceptance Ritual
I have a soft spot for Virgos because the only one I ever knew also happened to be one of the most individual and clever people I’ve met. Never afraid to take risks, say what he meant, or do his own thing — it was a joy to observe him. Even though he did things completely differently from the rest of his friends, it was always stylish and done well.
For my September maidens, I’ve designed some magic to play up your strengths and curb some weaknesses. Virgos can be hard on themselves in pursuit of perfection, so to begin, I’ve created a self-acceptance ritual that can be performed once a week or whenever you feel you’re coming down on yourself a little too hard.
Note: I sometimes use hard to find ingredients, so if you’d like more readily found herbs please mention this in the comments and I’ll list some alternatives for you. If you’d like to keep to the suggestions in the spell but can’t find the ingredients, just let me know and I’ll link to some affordable sources.
You will need:
- Burdock root
- A yellow candle
- The Hermit tarot card
- A small jar with a yellow cord
Place the Hermit card in front of the yellow candle, then on either side place the sardonyx and apatite. Encircle these items with the salt, then light the yellow candle. As the candle burns, sprinkle a little cinquefoil into the flame and add the burdock root to the circle of salt.
Take a few deep breaths and mentally start a list of the things about yourself that you like. You are not allowed to let these thoughts continue down a negative path. As you think about all these positive things, picture yourself standing in a small bath in a pristine marble room. The room is Grecian in design, with columns all around, and beyond it, you can see cliffs and the sea. In front of you, you see a waterfall feeding the pool, but instead of water flowing out of it, it’s a pale blue light rushing into the water at your feet. As you take a step, you see in the pool’s reflection that you have dark grey splotches on your skin. In this place, you can see exactly the toll self-criticism takes on you. It’s like a plague, and there’s only one way to get rid of it.
Take the apatite and sardonyx in each hand, and visualize stepping into the blue light waterfall. Go through your list of positive self-attributes and make each point longer and more detailed. If you’ve chosen kindness, think of all the times you were kind. If you’ve chosen talent, think of all the things you’ve done that prove this fact. Continue this visualization until you can see the grey spots disappearing and your skin glowing now, pure and clean. Open your eyes.
Pour some of the yellow candle wax into the jar and let it cool. However, don’t blow out the candle yet! Gather the salt and burdock and add it to the jar. Add some cinquefoil, then top off the bottle with more yellow wax and seal. Tie the yellow cord around the jar and blow out the candle. Waft the jar in the smoke until it disperses.
Leave this jar in the sun, sitting on top of the Hermit card with the apatite and sardonyx. At least once a week, you can light the yellow candle, placing the Hermit card and jar in front of it. Hold the stones, and return to the waterfall for a fresh start.
Divination For Virgos
In art, Virgo is depicted holding corn, a symbol of the harvest and season — reaping the rewards of hard work. According to legend, Virgo is linked to Astraea, a goddess who lived among humans until being around them became intolerable. You see, Virgo is sophisticated, intelligent, and subtle, which makes analytical divination a natural tool.
Grab a piece of paper and a pen, then say any question aloud as you also write it down. Make sure to write this sentence normally in your regular handwriting. Take a few moments to focus on this question, then turn the paper around and look at your handwriting upside down. What do you see? Are any letters standing out or can you find a word? Maybe instead you can see a design or image. Like all forms of divination, this will take some practice, but once you have a good grasp on what to look for and how to interpret signs, it’s fantastic for answering questions and getting more insight! Virgos like details, so finding the subtle clues will come easier for you. Time to put those analytical skills to the test!
The Health Box
From time to time, we can all be a little nervous when it comes to our health. That’s natural. Virgos, however, can take this to extremes and become hyper-fixated on their bodies and worry endlessly that something is wrong. Not good.
This year for your birthday, I want you to design a birthday sigil for yourself using the phrase “I am healthy.”
This isn’t a regular sigil to be activated and burned to ash. This is for a sigil health box.
What you will need:
- A small tin or wooden box
- High John the Conqueror
- Agate chips or stones, of any variety
Take the sigil you’ve created and on the inside of your box, draw the sigil in permanent ink or paint. Grind together your herbs and salt, then add this mix to the box. Drop in a few agate chips, and seal the box with a strong glue. This box is meant to be carried with you if you choose, so make sure no powder can escape.
Now it’s time for activation! This sigil will be connected to your body and health, so its activation will be a little different. Take a non-toxic marker (or henna, if you have it) and draw the sigil somewhere on your torso, preferably your stomach or center of your chest, then go about your normal activity. Over the next few days, the sigil will gradually wear off and become activated by your very (healthy) body! A wonderful way to initiate this specific magic.
Once the sigil is activated, draw or paint it again on the top of the box and you’re good to go!
This box is in no way a replacement for a trip to the doctor, by the way. If something is wrong, get a professional to check it out. This box is intended to promote good health and ease worry over imagined health problems, not cure true ailments.
As the seasons’ shift and summer fades, I hope you find this magic useful and some bountiful, positive changes come into your lives. Happy Birthday, Virgo!
