4 Incredible Spells To Bring A Little Magic To Your Winter

A lot of people I know have a love/hate relationship with winter and the cold weather it brings. This winter, I’m fortunate to be living in southern California, but I’ve experienced many frigid winters in the midwest.

It’s funny—I used to count the days until the temperatures would rise above forty degrees F. But now that I’m in California, I gotta say, I kind of miss it.

So for all you witches that are hunkered down with a fleece blanket, watching the snowflakes swirl around outside your window, give these cold weather spells a try.

Melting Snow Healing Spell

Use this spell if you’ve been trying to manifest something with your magic, and you’ve been having a lot of trouble getting results. This spell will help you uncover and heal any limiting or false beliefs that might be blocking your magic.

What You’ll Need:

  • A medium saucepan or pot
  • Snow
  • An athame, wand, a stick from outside, or a butter knife
  • A journal and writing utensil

Fill up your jar with snow or ice, bring it inside, and set it on your stove. Use the point of your athame, or whatever you’re using in place of an athame, and “write” the word release in the snow. You can also draw a sigil in the snow that represents anything that might be holding you back from manifesting your desires, or any word or symbol that resonates with you.

Say aloud or in your head, “As the snow melts, so do my false beliefs and blocks.”

Then turn on your stove and heat up your pot of snow. Sit down and begin journaling. Write down one of the things that you’ve been struggling to manifest at the top of the page.

For example: “I make abundant money from a job that utilizes my passions and unique talents.”

Then write down all the contrary thoughts that run through your mind after you’ve written that statement. Write as fast as you can, use bullet points, and don’t question what you write. Just write whatever you’re thinking even if it doesn’t make sense.

For example, my journal entry might look like this:

  • I’m not skilled enough to get a good job.
  • Jobs are so hard to find right now.
  • I don’t even know what I’m good at.
  • I’m never going to make the money I want.
  • The competition is too fierce.

Journal until all your snow has melted and begun boiling. (Do your journaling near your stove so you can keep an eye on your water.)

Once it begins boiling stop writing. Trust that the snow has given you enough time to get down your main blocks. Read over the list, and mentally dismiss each limiting belief. Decide why it’s either not true or why it isn’t going to stop you from getting what you want.

Carefully take your pot of water outside. Pour the boiling water out on the ground where it’s not going to harm anything.

Listen to that satisfying sizzle as your hot water meets the cold ground. That’s the sound of your limiting beliefs evaporating into the universe and floating far, far away from you.

Thank the elements of water and fire for helping you release your blocks, and notice if you start to see evidence in your life that you’ve truly shed those beliefs. This could come in the form of an unexpected opportunity, a comment from someone close to you, or it could be as simple as feeling more positive about your situation.

Lunar Ice Candle Magic

Perform this spell when you want a variation on your typical candle spell. Enjoy the contrast of using water and fire magic together in one spell.

What You’ll Need:

  • A jar, small pot, or bucket that won’t crack or get damaged by extreme cold. (Wide-mouth mason jars are perfect for this.)
  • A candle
  • Water

Place your candle in your cold-proof container. Fill the container with water, just enough so the top of the candle and the wick are not in the water. Set it outside to freeze overnight.

Notice what phase the moon is in on the night you set out your candle and water. It will take on the energy of the current moon phase and you can use that for your magic.

New Moon: Rebirth

This energy is perfect for setting intentions and celebrating new beginnings.

Waxing Moon: Expansion

This energy is great for abundance and manifesting magic involving growth or increasing something.

Full Moon: Celebration

Use full moon energy for celebrating any milestones in your life, and cultivating a sense of gratitude for things that are coming to you in the future.

Waning Moon: Release

This energy is beneficial for shedding unwanted energy, relationships, or habits in your life that are no longer serving you.

The next day, bundle up and take your magical practice outside. Slide the candle—along with the ice the has frozen around the candle—out of the container. Light the candle outside in the snow, and perform a candle magic spell of your choice. Watch the candle burn down in your witchy ice candle holder. Enjoy watching the flame flicker from behind a wall of ice.

Again, if you need ideas for what kind of spell to perform, harness the power of the moon by doing a candle spell that relates to the energy of the current moon phase.

Body Image Self-Love Meditation

A lot of time when it’s cold we don’t as pay much attention to our bodies. We’re all covered up in big sweatshirts and puffy jackets. This is an excellent spell to do when you’re feeling down about your appearance or any other perceived flaws you notice about your body. It will give you a boost of self-love on a cold day.

What You’ll Need:

  • A fireplace, space heater, or an electric blanket

Stand outside for a moment or two and notice how your body feels in the cold. Do your muscles tighten? Do your teeth chatter? Are you shivering? Can you feel goosebumps popping up all over your arms? Don’t stand out there too long, the colder it is the less time you should spend. You just need to be out there long enough to take notice of any physical sensations that you experience from the cold.

Now go inside and get warm! Sit in front of your space heater or fireplace, or wrap an electric blanket around you.

As you do this, say aloud or in your head, “I love my body for enabling me to experience all kinds of different sensations.”

Get cozy and notice how your body feels now. What physical sensations do you feel? Maybe you feel your muscles relax. Maybe your heart rate slows down. Whatever you experience, send a thank you to your body for allowing you to experience those things in the physical world.

As you warm up, imagine a pink light moving out from the heat source (fireplace, space heater or electric blanket). See the light surrounding you. Think of this as a sort of “hug” from your higher self to your body. Savor all the pleasant sensations you feel as you relax in the warmth.

Feel free to end your meditation whenever you feel complete.

Snowball Effect Manifesting Spell

This spell is perfect for when you get a substantial amount of good, wet packing snow, and you are at the beginning of a project or have a new idea. This spell will help you develop and grow it as quickly as possible.

What You’ll Need:

  • Snow

Stand outside. Make a small snowball in your hands as you set your intention and state it aloud or in your head. For example: “My idea manifests and grows into a profitable business (or whatever your goal is.) Unexpected doors fly open, and the right people come into my life to guide this project at just the right time. I celebrate my ability to co-create in this universe.”

Begin to visualize what your life will look like once your intention has manifested. Enjoy the symbolism of seeing your snowball grow in size just as your idea or project will grow. Notice that all you need to do to make a huge snowball is create a small one—the “seed” of an idea—and use some of your energy to push the snowball around. The snow does the rest, sticking to your snowball without any effort from you. You are not making the snow stick to the other snow. That’s just what snow does.

In the same way, when you set an intention (make a small snowball), the universe will attract opportunities for it to grow. All you must do is keep putting energy toward your goal. Don’t worry about how things will unfold. Just trust that they will unfold for your highest good as you take aligned action in the physical world toward your goal (rolling the snowball). All you have to do is keep rolling your snowball. Trust that nature will do the rest.

When you have a good-sized snowball and you feel like you’ve visualized your intention enough, you can end your spell. But if you want, you can do this with two more intentions and make a whole snowman!

Whether you can’t get enough of your winter wonderland, or you spend your winter days inside searching the internet for the best deal on a plane ticket to steamy Costa Rica, take some time to make magic with what nature has brought your way. There is power in winter. Harness that power with these cold weather spells, and come up with some of your own. Enjoy it now, because before you know it, spring will be here!
